Behind the Brand: Little Barn Apothecary

What’s non-toxic, uncomplicated and absolutely beautiful? Everything that Little Barn Apothecary makes!

We got together with our friends, the founders of Little Barn Apothecary, Joshua Morgan and Brad Scoggins, for a LOVE GOODLY exclusive interview, and learn more about them. Find out how they took the complicated out of your beauty routine!

What inspired you to start Little Barn Apothecary

We both have a passion for all things natural and organic, and we enjoy the simple things in life. Prior to founding Little Barn Apothecary, Joshua worked as an executive for 16 years in the luxury beauty and spa industry in New York and Chicago. Born to two entrepreneur parents in a Southern farming community, Brad has always been passionate about the healing power of nature. He previously worked in marketing, hospitality, and brand management. Our interest in a holistic lifestyle led us to create a line of products that were uncomplicated, simple, and beautiful that people could enjoy without any fillers or toxic chemicals.

How does social good factor into your company’s mission?

Chemical-laden skincare is everywhere today, and we wanted to create simple, organic formulas that were 100% safe, while leveraging the benefits and healing properties of herbs and botanicals. We also make each product label from TerraSkin – a tree-free, water-free material of rock and non-toxic resins that will eventually biodegrade under normal temperature, UV light and moisture conditions.

What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs?

When you start your own company, it becomes your whole life, especially during those first years. Look for a need in the marketplace, and focus on something you truly love. You’ll be better at your job and more excited about putting in the long hours.

Why did you choose to partner with LOVE GOODLY?

We appreciate that LOVE GOODLY is thoughtful about who they partner with and the products they curate. We’re excited to partner with a like-minded company committed to featuring items that are nontoxic and cruelty-free.

What one word best describes your company?

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Sometimes an idea doesn’t translate as seamlessly to an actual finished product. For example, certain fragrance profiles might work in oil form, but the fragrance changes when we use it in candle form, because of the chemistry that happens during the burning process. That’s why we spend lots of time exploring and testing!

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Hurraw!

We here at LOVE GOODLY have a problem – a lip balm problem. This is all thanks to to our friends at Hurraw! We’re just going to start out by saying if you haven’t tried one of these balms you are seriously missing out (hint hint).

Follow the jump to learn more about Hurraw! and find out how they’re able to – in their own words – “keep it real”!

What was the inspiration behind Hurraw!?
It sounds expected… but our intention was only ever to make super high qual vegan lip balm. We’re still working on that.
Why did you choose to create an eco-conscious brand?

What other way is there?

What does it mean to live life at the helm of such an authentic brand?
All encompassing. manufacturing consumes every minute of every day! but fulfilling and grateful
How has Hurraw! changed your life?
It’s confirming that we can make incremental positive change.
What advice would you give to someone reading this, who is inspired by your story and wanting to start his/her own eco-friendly company?
If you want to make/do/be something, do it with the best intentions and it will be successful. Don’t rush. Focus. Be patient. Never compromise quality. Always respect your customer.  If it ever becomes about profits, stop. If you’re making lots of money, you’re doing it wrong.
How important is it for a company to give back to the community?
If you can’t use your influence, skills and knowledge to try and make positive change then why are you even getting up in the morning?
What is your daily routine (or maybe first thing you do in the morning)?
cuddle dogs. feed dogs. feed chickens. feed squirrel. feed birds. water and harvest garden (or shovel snow). make tea. ride bike. make balm. repeat.

What can you always find in your purse / wallet?
I carry a beat up Reisenthel collapsable market basket which will have to be pried from my hands one day 😉  In it is the latest batch(es) of Hurraw for obsessive quality checks, a “what remains is future” pin from Patti Smith and sometimes my cell phone, if i can find it.
Who is your lifestyle icon?
Anyone looking up instead of down 😉 …anyonewith a kick ass attitude that is actively helping animals or other beings.
Three words to describe yourself or company?
keeping. it. real.

LOVE GOODLY interview with NOVICA Chief Executive Roberto Milk

Co-founder and Chief Executive of NOVICA Roberto Milk took inspiration from his missionary grandmother, and turned that into a company that has now raised over $65 million dollars in support of artisans around the world. According to the NOVICA website, many artists “don’t have the means to sell their work on the international market. NOVICA gives them a free platform to do this, and reach customers on a global scale.”

Roberto is changing that and changing the world in the process! Follow the jump to learn more about NOVICA’s Co-Founder!

What inspired you to start NOVICA?
My Peruvian grandmother was an artisan and my American grandmother was a missionary.  My parents who were both teachers would pack myself, my brother, my best friend, my cousins and my grandmothers into a VW van and we’d travel all over Latin America.  I daydreamed of Indiana Jones, collected a lot of rare and questionable souvenirs, and witnessed talented artisans in challenging circumstances.  NOVICA is deeply embedded in those roots.
What was one of your biggest challenges in the beginning, as an entrepreneur?

In the beginning, I had overwhelming passion for my cause – but not enough hours in the day to accomplish everything. I neglected basic – but very important – people and things, like taking time to eat a meal. Now, I’m all about balance.

How does social good factor into your company’s mission?

NOVICA directly connects customers with artisans, creating an engaging and positive marketplace environment. Our products meet the highest ethical and eco standards around.
What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs?

Have passion in what you do. You will eat, breathe, sleep your work – so you better believe in your cause.

Why did you choose to partner with LOVE GOODLY?

Our missions align closely. Given the choice and knowledge, we believe customers will choose an ethically-made, top quality product over a factory made one.
