Consumer Safety Guide Updates!

As all people do, when we purchase for the home (whether it is food, cleaning products, wellness items, etc.), we rely on the company and the government to bring to light any hazardous concerns we should be aware of. However, various findings and court proceedings show the opposite and that consumers themselves are the ones who are exposing the dangers of these products.

To help educate the public, Consumer Safety recently released an updated fact sheet of some commonly used products that are still on the market and not banned by the FDA or EDA.

Talc in Baby Powder
Dangers: Talcum powder has been linked to a higher risk of ovarian cancer & lung disease. Additionally, it can contain asbestos fibers, which have been linked with mesothelioma lung cancer.
Findings: Industry leader Johnson & Johnson has been at the center of the talc issue. Already, four juries have found in favor of plaintiffs who claimed their ovarian cancer was caused by prolonged use of Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder or Shower-to-Shower Powder. Reparations of up to $110 million have been ordered on behalf of the victims. Johnson & Johnson continues to deny any danger, and their talc-containing products are still available across the nation.
Regulatory Status: While the FDA does regulate talc in food products, cosmetic products are not currently required to be reviewed by the FDA. There is no federal ban on the use of talcum powder in cosmetic products, despite bans on the use of the ingredient by the European Union.

Teflon on Nonstick Pans
Dangers:
Increased risk of kidney and testicular cancers, as well as thyroid disease. Higher levels of exposure have been linked with miscarriage and fertility issues or birth defects.
Findings: Teflon (brand name) maker DuPont has been found guilty in several personal injury and wrongful death suits after the chemical was found to have tainted water surrounding the plants where they made their nonstick coating for cookware. A paper released in 2015 called the Madrid Statement was signed by over 200 scientists from 40 countries and presented evidence that Teflon, created in part by chemicals called poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), is carcinogenic. Additionally, these toxins were confirmed both by independent scientists and DuPont’s in-house team to be released by the nonstick pans after just 2-5 minutes of heat on the stove.
Regulatory Status: The EPA has ruled that a substance closely lined to PFAS, perfluorinated compounds, is a likely carcinogen. In 2005, the EPA fined DuPont for hiding information on the health hazards associated with PFAS. In 2010, the EPA launched a voluntary program to encourage manufacturers to reduce, and by 2015, eliminate these chemicals in their products. Though the Teflon brand name is no longer used, non-stick coated pans containing PFAS are still widely available in the cookware aisle.

Glyphosate in Weed Killer
Dangers:
Both the WHO and, more recently, the State of California, have listed glyphosate as a probable carcinogen. Glyphosate exposure has also been linked with kidney and liver issues. While more pressing danger has been associated with RoundUp Weed Killer, the use of the pesticide in farming has resulted in finds of trace amounts on popular foods, like Quaker Oats and Cheerios.
Findings: Current litigation against Monsanto’s RoundUp product is ongoing, with dozens of plaintiffs claiming their cancer was caused by RoundUp usage. However, Monsanto recently lost a battle with the State of California to keep the ingredient off a list of known carcinogens. Monsanto is now required to label their product with warnings accordingly.
Regulatory Status: After being called out last year for not including glyphosate in annual testing practices, the FDA began testing the herbicide; however, the testing was shut down soon after. A new testing period has begun recently, likely as a result of increased pressure stemming from these lawsuits. The EPA previously published reports saying that glyphosate was not a likely carcinogen, but with new studies to the contrary, and with California’s recent decision to list glyphosate as a carcinogen, perhaps it is time to take a deeper look into the issue. The EPA sets “tolerances” for residue from pesticides like glyphosate that remain on food products; American standards allow in some cases double the amount of residue than what the European Union considers safe.

You can also view all of the safety guides here.

We, at LOVE GOODLY, do our part by being transparent when it comes to sharing what is in each product! Using resources and databases such as the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics database and our list of banned ingredients, we thoroughly research each item before we include it inside our bi-monthly boxes or in our online shop.

Sleep Healthy – Organic Cotton Sheets

We strive to adopt a healthy and ethical lifestyle not just in our beauty and skincare and food, but also in our home. So we were thrilled to discover SOL Organics’ sheets.

IMG_0328_rev

So soft and inviting!

We all know buying organic cotton clothes and organic food is better for the planet, but we knew we were coming up short when it came to our sheets. Organic sheets are gaining popularity as people are aware of chemicals used in everyday products including bedding. Organic sheets are better for the planet. Pesticides to grow conventional cotton can enter the food chain through water run off and can affect the local farming communities. Organic sheets feel better as the fabric has had less contact with harsh chemicals. Organic sheets are not only durable but also biodegradable. Organic sheets are higher quality as the cotton is picked by hand and not washed with chemicals.

FullSizeRender-18

SOL Organics is also safe for babies!

Sleeping in comfort is a necessity in our homes and SOL Organics‘ sheets more than fit the bill. The first thing we both noticed was they are super soft and feel very luxurious – so comfy that our entire families were excited (see last photos!). And since we both love the color gray, we both had to have the dove gray sheets and duvet set (though we both also love the darker Steel Gray color and White as well).  Add to that the commitment to ethical and sustainable manufacturing, we are now completely obsessed with this brand.  Don’t you want to sleep comfortably (and healthier) too?

But it’s what’s behind this brand that makes it truly stand out. SOL Organics has a mission they call “Ethically made from Seed to Sheet.” They are certified fair trade, sourced from Kisan Samiti Farms, Central India. The super soft sheets are made from organic, non-GMO cotton. The crops are only rain-fed, using only natural fertilizers and no child labor. From there the sheets are crafted in their FLO Certified Factory (assuring fairness throughout global supply chains). They only use low impact eco-friendly dyes, reducing water usage. Then the final product comes packed in a re-usable bag made from fabric, natural coconut buttons and FSC certified recycled packaging.

This company passes on cost savings to consumers by removing distributors and selling direct. Their web site details how they are able to pass the cost savings to consumers they call the “Fair Price” model. We are sold!

Even Justine’s rescue dog Snoopy and Katie’s rescue cat Gus love SOL Organics‘ soft sheets!

On-The-Go De-Stress Kit: Natural Stress Relief Techniques

michael-frattaroli-236683.jpg

Image via Unsplash

Stress. It’s good for us. Stress can push us to get things done and focus on what really matters. Overwhelming stress is what we try to avoid. This stress is debilitating and leaves us mentally and psychically drained. We can get stressed anywhere and, as good as it sound, sitting in a bath tub with a glass of wine to reduce stress just isn’t always possible with our modern day schedules. With places to be, responsibilities and obligations, it can be hard to properly reduce stress when you’re out and about.

The On-The-Go De-Stress kit has you covered.

We filled this kit with recommended items and natural stress relief techniques so you can reduce stress anywhere, anytime. When you’re stressing out at your office desk at 3pm, this kit will do the trick!

BUT FIRST THINGS FIRST…

As much as we like to think stress relief techniques can reduce our stress, they can. But only temporarily. You can exercise as much as you’d like but until you solve or come to terms with the roots of your stress, it will come back to you.

To permanently reduce stress, identify the stressor. Ask yourself: What am I stressed about? Once you identify the stressor, find a solution. If you are stressed about a deadline, make plans to start now. If it’s general lifestyle stress, what can you take out or add into your life to reduce  it?

On-the-go De-Stress Kit:

  • Calm Meditation app Many studies have shown that mindful meditation can reduce psychological stress. Calm is an app (available on Android and iOS) that provides guided meditation in categories like breathing to help you slow down the heart rate and blood pressure, kicking in your relaxation mode. You can meditate anywhere; during lunch breaks, while you’re walking or in your car. It only takes 10 minutes!
  • Black Tea According to a study done by University College London, “drinking black tea may speed up our recovery from the daily stresses in life.” Lower levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) were detected in those who drank black tea after a stressful event as opposed to those who drank a placebo tea. Bring a couple of organic tea bags with you to brew at work or prepare a bottle of tea before going out.
Discover_Yoga_BestRest

  • Office Yoga Yoga is a great stress relief technique. We might not have the time to roll out the mat and spend 30 minutes in practice. Office yoga is the perfect solution to reap the stress alleviating benefits of yoga while on a time crunch. On your next break, try some of these beginning poses.

  • Chewing Gum Chewing gum has been linked to reducing stress as well as increasing productivity. It is an inexpensive stress relief technique. Generic chewing gum contains synthetic ingredients like polyisobutylene (a rubber used to make tire parts). A sustainable alternative is organic Chicza gum.

dreamstime_m_29379322-2-2

  • Take a walk Walking reduces stress and puts our brain in a calmer state. It doesn’t have to be far or long. Don’t check your phone while you’re walking. Put it on Airplane mode and engage with the present moment.

  • A Healthy Snack In order for our brains to think properly, we need to make sure it has the proper nourishment. A brain that lacks fuel will only heighten stress levels. Pack nutritious and filling snacks like carrot sticks with vegan peanut butter. You can’t go wrong with fruits, veggies and nuts.

  • Turn off the Phone Read this, watch that, answer me! There is no doubt our phones can overwhelm us with information. This doesn’t mean you have to drop off the face of the internet for hours. Some of us rely on our phones for important work. Turning off your phone for half an hour is still effective.

Appetizers to desserts, hopefully these vegan recipes (with vegan food tips and trivia) will help you create the ultimate vegan Mother’s Day brunch.

Golden pancakes drizzled in warm, smooth maple syrup… yumm.

Common dairy ingredients can be easily replaced with healthier, vegan ingredients such as almond/soy milk for milk, cornstarch or flaxseeds for eggs, and coconut oil for butter. Most generic white flours are vegan but there are healthier alternatives such as whole wheat flour and oat flour.

The peach and tomatoes crostini and granola & pomegranate bowl make a great start to Mother’s Day brunch.

Two-cents on bread: Bread has been getting a bad reputation for its gluten, carbs and supposedly, fat. Truth is, real bread is simply made out of flour, water and salt. It is highly nutritious and low in fat.

Interestingly, sweet potatoes are starting to substitute bread on dishes like pizza.

2017 Mother’s Day: 4 Simple Acts of Appreciation

LOVEGOODLYBlog-May17-Mothersday.png
Image via http://www.pngall.com

Mother’s day is for our many mothers.

To Mother Nature, who provides us with the essence of life, day after day, without expecting anything in return.

She loves us persistently

To our mother figures, who are always there for us with open arms no matter how far away we may stray. Who nurtures us so we may be the best version of ourselves.

She loves us unconditionally

To whomever is your mother or whatever you find a mother in, Mother’s Day is the day to stop for a moment in our busy lives and show our appreciation and love.

Plant something – On Mother’s Day giving back is the best way to show your appreciation for Mother Nature. To help out pollinators such as bees and butterflies, plant fennel, sage, and cardinal flowers. Find more insect friendly plants to plant here.

Find The Gift – It could be a handwritten letter or a beauty box of love. Contribute to their life in a way that is meaningful and special to them. Little acts of love go a long way!

Make a call – A simple phone call to say thank you and happy Mother’s Day can truly mean a lot.

Spend time together – Time is valuable and how you chose to use it shows what is important in your life. Go out for a walk, make brunch, or simply sit down and bond. The memories you create together will last a life time.

This month’s Guest Editor is Suzi from Gurl Gone Green. She talks about her nontoxic beauty and skincare journey, her inspiration, and her favorite food (p.s. you can find a recipe in our blog here!).

DSC06637-1

Why did you become a natural blogger?

After reading a book called No More Dirty Looks, I realized what was in my products was anything but pretty and I needed to make the switch. I had already switched over to clean eating, so this was the next step towards a natural lifestyle. I knew I wanted to share what I had learned with others in hopes that they to would transition to a toxic free life.

Screen Shot 2017-05-02 at 2.09.24 PM

Instagram @ GurlGoneGreen

How do you balance your career with being a mom?

Oh man, this is a hard question! It’s a challenge for sure. For me it’s about taking advantage of nap times, and at night when they’re sleeping. My husband is so great and will take the girls when I need to get something done. We always say we’re a team and I fully believe it. He helps me with a lot of the technical aspect of blogging, which is huge! I think overall planning is key. If I don’t plan things out, then I set myself up for failure.

What one piece of advice do you have for new bloggers?

I would say just be consistent and write from your passion. It’s easy to get focused on what everyone else is doing but I would just focus on what you want to do, then you’ll be effective. Don’t try to be something you’re not. Just be you, that’s what people love as corny as it may sound.

Why is nontoxic beauty and skincare so important to you?

I know firsthand the toxins lurking in the beauty industry. Being a cosmetologist I’ve seen it in hair products, skincare and makeup. It’s important because if we don’t advocate for cleaner products, then this is what my daughter’s are going to grow up using. It’s about making this world safer for the next generation. Knowing that I did my part to help protect my girls and others against toxins is a great feeling.

Who inspires you?

My brother. He is the first person that really challenged me to take my health seriously and helped me switch over to eating clean. Then he raised the bar and challenged me to look into cleaner beauty products. I’m so thankful for his passion to live life to the fullest, because it’s caused me to challenge myself!

What is your morning routine?

I go to the gym with my sister-workout for an hour. I always listen to a podcast while working out-me time. Come home, shower, wash my face, brush my teeth, do my makeup, blow dry my hair and then feed my youngest daughter(7 months). Then I make a smoothie for myself.

How did you decide to start a podcast?

I love listening to podcasts! Really that’s what started me thinking I should start one. I just really love learning as much as a I can and getting other people’s perspectives. I thought what better way than to start a podcast and share all of the nuggets with my audience. Plus, it’s totally different than writing and thought it might be nice to have something in a new format.

What is the most challenging about being a blogger?

One word that comes to mind is juggling. You’re constantly being pulled in a lot of directions. I could spend a day just responding to e-mails alone! Then you have new content you want to create, plus be consistent on social media, people want to interview you, you need to get new photos taken, update your website…etc. There’s just a lot of constant juggling happening. I’ve become an avid list maker-helps a ton!

What is the most rewarding thing?

Getting e-mails or messages telling you how your blog has changed someone’s life and how they’ve switched over their products. People will tell me how much the podcast has helped them. It makes it all worth it and so rewarding. It’s what it’s all about.

Instagram @ Cafe Gratitude

What is your favorite food? drink? restaurant? place to vacation?
Mexican is definitely my fave. Give me some chips and guac and I’m good! I’m a lover of sparkling water-add some lemon or lime makes it even better. My favorite restaurant is definitely Cafe Gratitude even though we don’t have one where I live. Every time I go to L.A. I have to hit it up-so good! Hawaii is definitely my favorite vacation spot-nothing beats the beach.

What one (or 3) words best describes you?

Passionate, driven, consistent

We hope you enjoyed reading about one of our favorite women in vegan lifestyle. Thank you for visiting the LOVE GOODLY blog, where we promote a cruelty-free and nontoxic lifestyle!

Glow from Inside Out! Vegan Foods for Beauty + Recipes

“A healthy outside starts from the inside” – Robert Urich

Along with using vegan and organic beauty products to bring out our best selves, we must not forget that beauty starts from within and radiates outwards. The foods we choose to eat everyday lay the foundation to the health of our bodies. Although, the key to beauty from within is by fueling our bodies with a variety of whole foods. We can pick and choose to eat foods that are rich in certain micronutrients that can help the growth, repair and nourishment of our skin, hair and nails. Consider incorporating some of these vegan foods into your everyday diet. With LOVE GOODLY and good food, your beauty will radiate from inside and out!

SKIN

SWEET POTATOES + GARLIC
Sweet potatoes contain antioxidants that are vital to protecting the skin from cell damage caused by free radicals. Sweet potatoes also contain beta-carotene which contributes to a healthy skin tone and skin cell development. They are also high in vitamin C which is needed to heal blemishes and maintain radiant skin. Garlic contains a good amount of zinc which is needed for repairing damaged skin and keeping skin soft.

Fries can actually be good for you! Here is a vegan oil- free sweet potato fries recipe.

AVOCADOS + BRAZILIAN NUTS

Don’t shy away from fats! They are essential for beauty. Avocados contain fatty acids which helps the skin stay plump and moisturized. Avocados also contain high amounts of vitamin E. This vitamin plays a role in minimizing cell damage and promoting skin growth. Brazilian Nuts are high in selenium. Selenium, along with vitamin C and E, can prevent age spots, skin cancer and sun damage. Try this vegan Avocado Ranch dressing
to drizzle on top of salads or this vegan guacamole dip.

HAIR

LEGUMES + LEAFY GREENS
Hair is made out of protein. To keep strong, healthy, shining hair, make sure to include enough protein in your diet. Legumes are one of the highest sources of plant protein. A lack of protein in the diet may cause thinning of the hair, hair loss and dryness.  Dark leafy vegetables like kale, spinach and broccoli are also high in protein.

Make a quick and easy vegan lentil soup to get your protein in or a simple green smoothie to-go.

DARK CHOCOLATE + FRUIT

Iron is a vital mineral for the hair. A lack of iron in the diet may cause hair loss. Dark chocolate (70-90% Cacao) is a healthy treat high in iron.

Tip: Consume foods high in vitamin C (such as fruits or try a mykind Organics Vitamin C Spray) with iron because vitamin C helps the body absorb your iron intake.

Create your own vegan dark chocolate treats with this fun and easy recipe.

OATS + B-12
Oats contain an abundance of nutrients such as B-complex vitamins, zinc, and copper. These micronutrients are important for maintaining healthy nails. You can use oats to make these gluten- free banana oat muffins for breakfast.

Vitamin B-12 is also crucial to nail health. A deficiency in B-12 may cause dry and dark nails. There are many ways to get cruelty-free B-12 including the mykind Organics Organic B12  spray.

FLAX + SUN FLOWER SEEDS

Flax seeds are high in omega- 3 fatty acids which keep nails strong. Sunflower seeds provide a great source of biotin which reduces splitting of the nails and aids to finger nail thickness.

Here is a vegan pancake recipe using flax seeds.
