Consumer Safety Guide Updates!

As all people do, when we purchase for the home (whether it is food, cleaning products, wellness items, etc.), we rely on the company and the government to bring to light any hazardous concerns we should be aware of. However, various findings and court proceedings show the opposite and that consumers themselves are the ones who are exposing the dangers of these products.

To help educate the public, Consumer Safety recently released an updated fact sheet of some commonly used products that are still on the market and not banned by the FDA or EDA.

Talc in Baby Powder
Dangers: Talcum powder has been linked to a higher risk of ovarian cancer & lung disease. Additionally, it can contain asbestos fibers, which have been linked with mesothelioma lung cancer.
Findings: Industry leader Johnson & Johnson has been at the center of the talc issue. Already, four juries have found in favor of plaintiffs who claimed their ovarian cancer was caused by prolonged use of Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder or Shower-to-Shower Powder. Reparations of up to $110 million have been ordered on behalf of the victims. Johnson & Johnson continues to deny any danger, and their talc-containing products are still available across the nation.
Regulatory Status: While the FDA does regulate talc in food products, cosmetic products are not currently required to be reviewed by the FDA. There is no federal ban on the use of talcum powder in cosmetic products, despite bans on the use of the ingredient by the European Union.

Teflon on Nonstick Pans
Dangers:
Increased risk of kidney and testicular cancers, as well as thyroid disease. Higher levels of exposure have been linked with miscarriage and fertility issues or birth defects.
Findings: Teflon (brand name) maker DuPont has been found guilty in several personal injury and wrongful death suits after the chemical was found to have tainted water surrounding the plants where they made their nonstick coating for cookware. A paper released in 2015 called the Madrid Statement was signed by over 200 scientists from 40 countries and presented evidence that Teflon, created in part by chemicals called poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), is carcinogenic. Additionally, these toxins were confirmed both by independent scientists and DuPont’s in-house team to be released by the nonstick pans after just 2-5 minutes of heat on the stove.
Regulatory Status: The EPA has ruled that a substance closely lined to PFAS, perfluorinated compounds, is a likely carcinogen. In 2005, the EPA fined DuPont for hiding information on the health hazards associated with PFAS. In 2010, the EPA launched a voluntary program to encourage manufacturers to reduce, and by 2015, eliminate these chemicals in their products. Though the Teflon brand name is no longer used, non-stick coated pans containing PFAS are still widely available in the cookware aisle.

Glyphosate in Weed Killer
Dangers:
Both the WHO and, more recently, the State of California, have listed glyphosate as a probable carcinogen. Glyphosate exposure has also been linked with kidney and liver issues. While more pressing danger has been associated with RoundUp Weed Killer, the use of the pesticide in farming has resulted in finds of trace amounts on popular foods, like Quaker Oats and Cheerios.
Findings: Current litigation against Monsanto’s RoundUp product is ongoing, with dozens of plaintiffs claiming their cancer was caused by RoundUp usage. However, Monsanto recently lost a battle with the State of California to keep the ingredient off a list of known carcinogens. Monsanto is now required to label their product with warnings accordingly.
Regulatory Status: After being called out last year for not including glyphosate in annual testing practices, the FDA began testing the herbicide; however, the testing was shut down soon after. A new testing period has begun recently, likely as a result of increased pressure stemming from these lawsuits. The EPA previously published reports saying that glyphosate was not a likely carcinogen, but with new studies to the contrary, and with California’s recent decision to list glyphosate as a carcinogen, perhaps it is time to take a deeper look into the issue. The EPA sets “tolerances” for residue from pesticides like glyphosate that remain on food products; American standards allow in some cases double the amount of residue than what the European Union considers safe.

We, at LOVE GOODLY, do our part by being transparent when it comes to sharing what is in each product! Juicing For Your Health

LOVE GOODLY_ Juicing for Health_July 2017_image 1_Juicegeneration.com

We know sometimes it’s hard to eat our fruits and vegetables. Juicing is a delicious way to get them in! Juicing also gives your stomach a break from digesting solid foods while still in taking more essential vitamins, antioxidants and nutrients.

Not all juices are created equal. The best and most nutritious kinds of juices to buy are those that are organic, cold pressed, and contains no added sugars or other ingredients. Cold pressed juices taste better and are more nutritious than regular juices because during the juicing process, enzymes in the fruits and vegetables are not destroyed. When we are out and about, we like to grab Suja’s organic, cold-pressed juices.

If juice is something you would like to incorporate into your diet more regularly, it would be beneficial and financially more sound to invest in a juicing machine. There are three types of common juicers:

  • Centrifugal juicers: These machines are the least expensive option. Centrifugal extractors chop and crush the input with a high spinning blade, extracting juices from the pulp using centrifugal force. However, the blades generate a lot of heat, which destroys the enzymes in the input, rendering the juice less nutritious. This is a great blender if you’re looking for something that does the job and not picky about lost nutrients.
  • Masticating juicers: These juicers crush your input and squeezes out as much juice as possible. That being said they extract juice at a much slower rate. Masticating juicers also process nuts so you can make your favorite plant-based milks. They are quitter than centrifugal juicers and more efficient.
  • Triturating juicers: The best of the best, but also the priciest! Triturating juicers have twin gears that crush the input in between, producing the maximum amount of juice and a very dry pulp. There is little to no foam in the juice and it preserves almost all nutrients.

Many juice bars sell one, three, or five day juice cleanses. Juice cleanses don’t necessarily “detox” or “clean” our bodies nor will they help us lose sustainable weight. In essence, you are simply consuming fruits and vegetables without their fiber for however many days. But done with the right intentions, juice cleanses can be a great tool to resetting your body from previous eating habits. They also give your stomach a break while still being sustained by the nutrients and vitamins of the juice.

Happy Juicing!

7 Hidden Animal Ingredients in Beauty Products

You are standing in the store for what seems like hours trying to decipher the list of ingredients on the back of a shampoo bottle. Is this vegan? We know why choosing vegan and cruelty- free products matter. But finding vegan beauty products can get hard and intimidating. We have compiled a list of common hidden animal ingredients (some may be a bit explicit) in beauty products to help you make the most mindful decision for yourself and the planet.

Lanolin
Lanolin is commonly found in various creamy skin care products like moisturizers, conditioners, and lipsticks. It is a wax product produced by glands of wool-bearing animals and extracted from their wool. Sheep are commonly used to get Lanolin for beauty products. Like animals kept for their fur, these sheep are crammed into hot spaces, used and slaughtered. Lanolin is also known as Lanolate, Lanogene, Laneth, Lanolin alcohols, Lanosterols, Aliphatic Alcohol, Cholesterin, wool wax and wool fat.

Cysteine
Cysteine can be found in hair care and cream products. It is an amino acid from various kinds of animal hair. Cysteine can also be found in baked goods and healing ointments.

Estrogen
Commonly found in perfumes, creams and lotions. In beauty products, estrogen is a type of drug from pregnant horse urine. It is also used in birth control pills and for reproductive problems.

Carmine
Cochineal bugs live on cactuses and feed on red berries. Female cochineals and their eggs are collected by the thousands and boiled. Once boiled and dried, they are crushed, producing a bright red pigment. This dye is used in beauty products that require color like lipstick and blush. Carmine is also known as Cochineal, Carminic acid, and Dactylopius Coccus Extract. 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Palette uses fruit and vegetable pigments as an alternative.

Gelatin
Leftover tendons, skin, bones and ligaments of cows and pigs are boiled to make gelatin. Gelatin is not only found in nail products, face masks and shampoos, but also in common sweets like candy, Jell-O and marshmallows.

Tallow
Tallow is created by boiling slaughtered animals until a fat substance arises. It is used in lipsticks, foundations soaps, paint, crayons, etc.… yuck! Tallow is also known as Fatty acids, Sodium salts, and Stearic acid.

Keratin
The protein of grinded up hooves, horns, feathers, and hairs of other animals make up keratin. Keratin is in shampoos, hair and nail treatment products. It is also known as animal protein, Hydrolyzed protein, Cheratina, Detoxin, and Cocodimonium Hydroxypropyl. LVX nail polish is Keratin –free.

LOVE GOODLY makes the search for 100% vegan beauty products effortless. From foundations, lipsticks, to face cleansers and moisturizers, LOVE GOODLY provides 100% vegan and cruelty-free products.

2017 Mother’s Day: 4 Simple Acts of Appreciation

LOVEGOODLYBlog-May17-Mothersday.png
Image via http://www.pngall.com

Mother’s day is for our many mothers.

To Mother Nature, who provides us with the essence of life, day after day, without expecting anything in return.

She loves us persistently

To our mother figures, who are always there for us with open arms no matter how far away we may stray. Who nurtures us so we may be the best version of ourselves.

She loves us unconditionally

To whomever is your mother or whatever you find a mother in, Mother’s Day is the day to stop for a moment in our busy lives and show our appreciation and love.

Plant something – On Mother’s Day giving back is the best way to show your appreciation for Mother Nature. To help out pollinators such as bees and butterflies, plant fennel, sage, and cardinal flowers. Find more insect friendly plants to plant here.

Find The Gift – It could be a handwritten letter or a beauty box of love. Contribute to their life in a way that is meaningful and special to them. Little acts of love go a long way!

Make a call – A simple phone call to say thank you and happy Mother’s Day can truly mean a lot.

Spend time together – Time is valuable and how you chose to use it shows what is important in your life. Go out for a walk, make brunch, or simply sit down and bond. The memories you create together will last a life time.
